The Outgoing Army Commander, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake has been promoted to the rank of General by President Maithripala Sirisena.

General Senanayake retired yesterday and he was replaced by Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva.

Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva will assume duties as the 23rd commander of the Sri Lanka Army tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Canada has also issued a statement with regard to the appointment of Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva as the commander of the Sri Lanka Army.

In its statement, Canada says that Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva is accused of human rights violations during the war.

It says, therefore, his appointment would affect the reconciliation and accountability process.

Meanwhile, The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet expressed serious concerns about the appointment of Lieutenant-General Shavendra Silva, who has been alleged of human rights violations during the war, as the country's new army commander.

The US embassy in Colombo also expressed concern saying the appointment undermines Sri Lanka's international reputation and its commitments to promote justice and accountability, especially at a time when the need for reconciliation and social unity is paramount.

Meanwhile, Joint Opposition MP SM Chandrasena expressed is views with regard to the international allegations made against Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva.
