Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, who was appointed as the 23rd Army Commander of Sri Lanka, assumed duties this morning at the Army Headquarters.

The Army Media Unit stated that the Sri Lanka Artillery accorded him a Guard of Honour on behalf of the new Commander of the Army.

He is the first Commander of the Army, produced by the Gajaba Regiment.

Meanwhile, a senior U.S. State Department official warned that Sri Lanka’s appointment of a war veteran accused of human rights violations as head of its army could affect U.S. military cooperation and investment in the island nation.

The Washington official, speaking to reporters in the background, said the appointment, would have lasting implications for reconciliation.

The official also warned of a possible impact on foreign investment.

The official also suggested that the new appointment could also affect a 480 million dollar grant through the U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation, aimed at modernizing Sri Lanka’s urban transport system and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the Information Department announced today that the Cabinet has approved the Finance Minister’s proposal to amend the Sri Lanka United States Cooperation agreement.

The communiqué issued by the Department further stated that the US grants under this agreement have been increased to 47.81 from 35.95 million US dollars and to 44.52 from 33.86 million US dollars respectively.

The deadline for the program has also been extended up to December 31, 2022.
