Doctors’ strike disrupts hospital functions

Hospital functions throughout the island have been disrupted due to the token strike launched by the members of the Government Medical Officers Association.

The strike was launched on 8 issues including drug shortage and importing substandard drugs for the government hospitals. Our correspondents stated that OPD and clinical services have also been affected by the ongoing strike.

However, the strike is not implemented in maternity hospitals, children’s hospitals, Maharagama Apeksha Hospital, kidney treatment units and tri forces hospitals.

Deputy Director of the Accident Unit of Colombo National Hospital, Dr Samandi Samarakoon stated that the OPD services and clinical services have been gravely affected by the strike.

Meanwhile, hospital sources stated that functions of Kandy General Hospital, government hospitals in the Northern Province, hospitals in the estate sector have also been affected.

Meanwhile, GMOA deputy secretary Dr Naveen de Soyza said that the authorities still have time to respond to their demands.
