Supreme Court commences to hear whether Provincial council election can be held

The five-member Supreme Court Bench commenced hearing this morning on the reference application of the President seeking a determination of the Supreme Court whether the provincial council election can be held without the report of the delimitation committee.

This was taken up before a five-member panel of judges headed by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya and comprising of judges Buwaneka Aluvihare, Sisira de Abrew, Prasanna Jayawardena and Vijith Malalgoda.

The final decision on whether the Provincial Council election can be held before the presidential election will be taken based on the determination of the Supreme Court.

Thirteen parties and the Attorney General are due to present their arguments before the Supreme Court today.
