According to reports the alliance lead by the UNF as well as the nomination of the presidential candidate will take place subsequent to prime minister’s visit to Maldives.

Political sources said that the prime minister will leave the country on Monday for a 3 day official visit to Maldives and the alliances as well the nomination of the presidential candidate will take place after he returns.

However UNP MP Hesha Withanage said recently that if the presidential candidate is not nominated by yesterday, not only the monitoring MPs, certain state and cabinet ministers are also prepared to vacate their posts.

Meanwhile UNP MP Harshana Rajakaruna said that presidential candidate will be named by mid September.

However non-cabinet minister Ajith P. Perera said that a letter signed by 54 parliamentarians requesting for the immediate nomination of the presidential candidate was presented to the prime minister and that he saddened by the prime minister’s lack of response to the letter.
