A senior member of the United National Party stated that several backbenchers in parliament have complained to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe about a campaign being carried out by several non-cabinet ministers to forcefully collect signatures for a petition requesting that Sajith Premadasa be nominated as the UNP's presidential candidate.

These MPs have telephoned the Prime Minister who was on an official visit to the Maldives recently asking him to take immediate action against this undue process of threatening MPs and collecting signatures.

It is reported that they have stated that they will get Sajith nominated in one way or the other and then once he is nominated, he will proceed to win the election and once he becomes President, he will automatically become the party leader according to the party constitution. Therefore, these non-cabinet ministers have threatened the MPs stating that if they abstain from signing the petition requesting Sajith be nominated as the Presidential candidate that they would also have to let go of any desire of contesting the parliamentary elections.

Sources close to the Prime Minister have said that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has told them that he would take a firm decision without delay against those who threaten MPs of his party.
