Police suspect that an underworld leader, Kosgoda Sujee, was behind the shooting of a person inside a bus in the Atakohata, 8th mile post on the Elpitiya-Aluthgama road.

41-year-old Ranjith Jayawardena, a resident of Elgiriyagama in Elpitiya was shot dead by a person who came on a motorbike, while he was inside a SLTB bus travelling from Aluthgama to Elpitiya via Uragasmanhandiya.

He was shot while he was traveling with his mother and sister to attend a land case hearing in the Elpitiya District Court.

The driver of the bus told the Hiru news team that one of the two persons who came on a motorbike had got into the bus from the rear entrance, fired at the victim and fled in the motorbike.

At that time, the victim was sitting in the first seat in front of the rear entrance to the left.

A 9mm pistol was used in the shooting, and five used bullet shells were found at the scene.

The driver of the bus stated that a large number of passengers were also present at the time of the incident and that they ran for cover in great fear.

A senior police officer who is investigating the death of Ranjith Jayawardena said that he was involved in the murder of two persons who were hacked to death with a sharp weapon inside a house in the Uragasmanhandiya, Ihalamalawala - Ranthotuwila area on September 30, 2018.

The two victims, Chamila Deepal Ranasinghe and Saman Suresh, were two close associates of the underworld leader Kosgoda Sujee.

Therefore, the police suspect that this shooting may have been as an act of revenge. Police have launched an operation to apprehend the two men who arrived on the motorcycle.

In the meantime, an operation is still underway to locate the two suspects who fled after shooting two police officers in the Tibbatuwawa area in Akuressa.

It is said that several police teams have been deployed under the supervision of the Superintendent of Police, Matara.

The two policemen were on duty and pursued a motorbike that ignored the police commands and were shot while in pursuit.

The suspects were riding the bike without a number plate and three people were on the bike. The police stated that the person in the middle shot the policemen who were behind them in pursuit.

A police sergeant and a constable attached to the Akuressa Police Station were injured in the incident and are currently receiving treatment at Ward 5 of the Matara General Hospital. A hospital spokesperson stated that they have gunshot injuries to their knees.
