UNP Chairman minister Kabeer Hashim says that nominating party leader prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as the presidential candidate at the up-coming presidential election was not discussed during the meeting held with the senior membership of the UNP yesterday.

Expressing his views at a media briefing in Colombo today the minister said that it was discussed to select a suitable candidate for the presidential election.

Sources said that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had said that he intends to run as the candidate representing the Alliance led by the UNP.

However, it was reported that the Prime Minister had said that the Working Committee would take a final decision in case someone was to challenge his view.

It was also reported that Ministers Kabir Hashim, Ranjith Maddumabandara and Malik Samaraweera had held opposing views, putting their weight behind Minister Sajith Premadasa.

Meanwhile, the discussion to be held between Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and UNP Deputy Leader Minister Sajith Premadasa has been moved from tomorrow to Tuesday.

A motion requesting Minister Sajith Premadasa to be nominated as the presidential candidate was passed at the UNP local government representative’s convention held at the Sugathadasa indoor stadium today.

The motion was presented by the chairman of the Mahiyanganaya Pradeshiya Sabha Karu Weeraratne while Chairman of the Seruwawila Pradeshiya Sabha A.G Ranasinghe seconded it.

A group including UNP deputy leader Sajith Premadasa and party chairman Kabeer Hashim were present at the convention.
