12 Navy personnel who were remanded in connection with an incident of shooting at a fishing vessel which did not heed orders to stop on the Kokilai sea belt were released on bail today when they were produced before the Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court.

The Navy had requested through a motion to grant bail to these 12 Navy personnel and the Magistrate of Trincomalee who took this into consideration decided to release them on bail, Navy Media Spokesman Lieutenant Commander Isuru Suriyabandara said.

A navy vessel which was on patrol along the Kokilai sea belt, had observed a suspicious vessel on 28th August and Navy personnel had signalled them to stop. However, since the vessel ignored the orders and continued on its way, it was reported that they had shot at the vessel.

Subsequent to producing the 12 navy personnel in Court in connection with this incident, they were remanded until today.
