The Court of Appeal ordered the Colombo Chief Magistrate Court to release former defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa from the Avant-Garde Maritime floating armoury case.

The Bribery Commission had filed actions against the former defence secretary and several others alleging that they caused a loss of 11.4 billion rupees to the government by giving permission to the Avant-Garde Maritime Service Company to run a floating armoury in the Galle harbour.

Judges of the Court of Appeal, Achala Vengappuli and Arjuna Obeysekera announced their decision after considering Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s petition that challenged the ruling which was issued by the Magistrate and High Court.

Meanwhile, the Colombo Permanent High Court-at-Bar summoned thirteen respondents before Court on September 27, including the Chairman of Avant-Garde Maritime Company Nissanka Senadhipathi.

The Attorney General has filed an action against the respondents under 7 thousand 573 charges including possessing 813 automatic firearms, 935 live bullets on board the Avant-Garde vessel and transporting them.
