The Irrigation Department said that the water levels of the Kelani, Kalu and Gin rivers and the Attanagalu Oya which rose due to heavy rains experienced are receding gradually.

However, in a statement issued this morning by the department it is stated that the water level of the Kalu river at Millakanda and of the Attanagalu Oya at Dunamale still remain at minor flood level.

The statement also says that persons living in the vicinity of the Nilwala River which has risen to a risky level, in the Panadugama area should be vigilant.

Meanwhile due to heavy rains being experienced on the western slopes of the central hills a sluice gate of the Kotmale reservoir was automatically opened this morning.

Our Hiru Correspondent said that water levels in the Castlereagh and Moussakelle reservoirs are reaching spill level.

With the excessive rains, 1315 families in Ja-Ela, Minuwangoda, Wattala and Katana Divisional Secretariat Divisions of the Gampaha District have been effected.

The Disaster Management Center said that as a result of sudden floods, 595 persons in the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Sri Jayawardenapura – Kotte and Thimbirigasyaya in the Colombo District have also been effected.

Warnings regarding landslides which were issued in the Ratnapura, Nuwara Eliya, Kegalle and Kalutara districts will remain in effect until 4.00 this evening, the National Building Research Organization announced.

Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department says that thundershowers are expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and Northwestern Provinces this evening.
