Employees of the Sri Lanka Transport Board are engaged in a strike for the third day running, requesting that they be paid the raise of Rs. 2,500 granted to government employees, among 5 other demands.

Both long and short distance bus travel has been interrupted as a result.

SLTB employees from 80 depots have joined the strike as of now and the President of the Sri Lanka Independent National Transport Employees Union, Saman Pushpakumara said that they have decided to continue with the strike.

In response to an inquiry made by the Hiru News Division from the Chairman of SLTB, Upali Marasinghe, he said that a discussion was held with the trade unions yesterday on these issues.

The Chairman also said that the trade unions agreed to suspend the strike.

Meanwhile, the strike based on several demands by the University Trade Unions Collective is continuing for the 9th day.

They are engaged in a protest march at present and as a result roads in the vicinity of the Town Hall are congested with traffic, our Hiru Correspondent said.

In the meantime, based on a salary issue, Mahaweli Engineers have put sick leave today and are engaged in trade union action as well.
