A resolution made to the special cabinet meeting by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to abolish the executive presidency was withdrawn due to the objection by the majority members.

The Special Cabinet was convened under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena at his office this afternoon.

The majority members stated that making such a proposal at a time when a presidential election has already been declared is not suitable.

They questioned as to why such a proposal was not made a few months ago.

Their opinion is that such a proposal could be considered after the already declared election is held.

A special cabinet meeting was held at the presidential secretariat under the patronage of President Maithreepala Sirisena this evening after the meeting with the Prime Minister.

In this instance the proposal to abolish the executive presidency was discussed while Ministers Rauf Hakeem, Mano Ganeshan and Palani Digambaram had scrutinized the proposal.
