Investigation into paying by installment a 4000 rupee million tax imposed on Casinos

The Committee on public accounts has called for a report from the commissioner of inland revenue regarding the payment of 4000 million rupees tax imposed on Casinos on installment basis.

Member of the committee MP Nalinda Jayatissa noted that the report will be submitted to the committee within a week.

The 2015 budget imposed a tax of 4000 million rupees on casinos to be paid upfront.

However, the auditor general has reported to the public accounts committee that the respective casinos have been paying their taxes on an quaterly basis according to their preference, varying from 25 to 15 million.

There are 4 casinos functional in Sri Lanka currently, and it was revealed when inquired by Hiru News that collectively all casinos had paid less than 1500 million rupees in taxes.

Accordingly MP Nalinda Jayatissa noted that prior to the committee of public accounts launching a comprehensive investigation into the matter, a complete report from the commissioner of inland revenue has been called for.
