Former Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse and eight others have been acquitted from the case with regard to authorizing AvantGarde to operate a floating armoury resulting in losses worth Rs 11.4 billion to the government.

This was when the case filed by the Bribery Commission was taken up before the Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne today.

When the case was taken up previously the Attorneys appearing on behalf of the defendant Gotabhaya Rajapaksa informed the court that the Court of Appeal had already ruled that the Bribery Commission's filing of the case was illegal.

Accordingly, the Magistrate ordered the Attorneys of the defendant Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to produce a copy of the decision of the Court of Appeal today.

A copy of the decision of the Court of Appeal was accordingly submitted to the Court and therefore, the Chief Magistrate acquitted the accused accepting the decision of the Court of Appeal.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Leader of the United National Party, Minister Sajith Premadasa arrived at the Presidential Commission of Inquiry appointed to investigate corruption in state institutions from 2015-2018.

This is to provide evidence regarding a complaint relating to recruitment exceeding the required number of employees, without due approvals for the Housing Development Authority.
