Road Development Authority advised drivers to use alternate routes as the Kokmaduwa and Welipenna exits on the Southern Expressway have been inundated due to heavy rains.

A spokesperson for the Authority stated that the vehicle movement towards Weligama and Akuressa have been completely stalled due to the flooding at the Kokmaduwa exit.

The flooding at the Welipenna exit is not causing any obstruction to travel on the Southern Expressway from Kottawa to Mathugama. Vehicles travelling towards Aluthgama are requested to use the Dodamgoda exit instead of the Welipenna exit.

In addition, vehicles traveling from Matara to Colombo can travel to Matugama via the Kurundugahahathapma or Dodamgoda exit without using the Welipenna exit.

Since the road is slippery due to the constant rains, the police advise motorists to be cautious about speed limits when traveling on the Southern Expressway as well as the other approach roads.

With the torrential rains continuing, several roads in Colombo are still under water.

The Police Spokesperson’s Office stated that Armor Street in front of the Kotahena Jethawana Temple, Kotahena - Bloemendhal Road, Jinthupitiya Junction, Kirulapana Road in front of the police, High Level Road, Baseline Road as well as several roads in Dematagoda have been flooded.
