Teachers and war hero’s demonstrations block Colombo traffic

The functions of government schools were disrupted following a strike launched by the teachers and principals trade unions this morning.

Train services were also crippled due to the strike launched by railway workers effective last midnight.

In addition, traffic came to standstill in Colombo Fort, Pettah and its surroundings as teachers and principals staged a demonstration in front of the Fort Railway station this noon.

Train commuters especially office workers faced grave inconveniences as trains services were limited to 6 out of the average daily 340 services.

The railway strikers insisted that they would continue the strike indefinitely if their demands are not met.

Meanwhile addressing a media conference in Colombo, Transport deputy minister Ashok Abeysinghe said that the government would take strict action if the strike is continued next week.

In addition, addressing the media, Lanka Teachers Association general secretary Joseph Stalin said that the teacher would engage in the strike tomorrow as well.

At the same time, the strike launched by University non-academic workers completes 16 days today.

Further, the strike launched yesterday by the Government Executive Officers continued today as well.
