Most trade unions are engaged in strike action due to salary anomalies.

The trade union action launched by the university joint trade unions is continuing for the 20th day today.

The university joint trade unions say that if their demands are not met during the coming week, they will commence a large scale series of protests in Colombo.

Furthermore the train strike that commenced on the 26th of this month continues for a 6th day today.

The railways control room said only 7 train journeys are in operation today as well.

Meanwhile the cabinet sub-committee appointed by the president has decided to hold a special discussion with several trade unions including train and teacher trade unions.

Expressing his views regarding the strikes chairman of the elections commission Mahinda Deshapriya said that he hopes the strikes will be over before the calling of nominations.
