A special operation has been launched last night in the Habarana – Hiriwadunna, Thumbikulama forest reserve where six tuskers and a wild male elephant had died.

The wildlife officials said that the armed forces and the wildlife officers have joined the police in this operation.

A spokesperson for the Sigiriya Wildlife Office informed the Hiru news team that the operation would be carried out this afternoon if necessary.

The post mortem examination of the six tuskers and the male wild elephant killed mysteriously was completed yesterday.

10 teams including wildlife officials, army and the police carried out a massive operation in the reserve yesterday to find out if there are any more dead wild elephants in the area, but nothing was found.

Subsequent to the post mortem examination, the remains of the tuskers were sent to the Government analyst to ascertain whether any poison had been ingested.

Wildlife officials have decided to report to the court regarding the information of the post-mortem examination.

Speaking to the media after the post-mortem examination, Veterinary Surgeon Chandana Jayasinghe said there was no substantial evidence to suspect that the dead animals were poisoned with food.
