A petition has been filed with the Court of Appeal seeking an injunction on the Public Administration and Internal Affairs Minister, to suspend the acceptance of the SLPP Presidential Candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as a Sri Lankan citizen.

The petition is scheduled to be taken for hearing effective this Wednesday.

The petition was taken before Appeals Court chairman Yasantha Kodagoda and Justice Arjun Obeysekera this morning.

However, on the importance of the petition, Justice Mahinda Samayawardana will also join the bench to hear the petition which is to be heard starting Wednesday.

The petition challenging the citizenship of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has been filed by Professor Chandragupta Thenuwara and Gamini Viyangoda.

When the petition was taken for hearing this morning, lawyers appearing for Gotabhaya Rajapaksa did not object to the hearing.

The Controller of Immigration and Emigration, the Commissioner-General of Registration of Persons, the Public Administration and Internal Affairs Minister, his secretary, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the Acting IGP and the CID Director are among the respondents.

The petitioners state that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has obtained a local passport declaring that he renounced his US citizenship recently.

They further state that they have reliable information that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has obtained this passport without submitting proper documents.

They also, state that the obtaining of this passport, as well as a National Identity card, is illegal.

They request the court to issue an order declaring Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s passport and national identity card null and void until a judgment is announced over the petition.
