The Railway Trade Unions are currently holding a special discussion in Colombo to determine the course of action to be taken with the issuance of a special gazette notification identifying railway department as an essential service.

Although the gazette notification was issued last night on the orders of President Maithripala Sirisena, the strike launched by the railway trade unions over salary anomalies continues today for the 9th day.

The Gazette notification states that labour for services of any description whatsoever necessary or required to be handled by the Department of Railways including the transport services by rail and railway lines, their maintenance, operation of signal lights essential for the efficient and uninterrupted operation of the train service as part of the public transport services for passengers or goods, have to be provided.

Previously cabinet approval was provided to make the Railway Department a closed service.

The government also announced that railway employees who do not report to work without calling in for sick leave will we considered as having vacated post.

In this backdrop, steps have been taken to provide police protection for the trains that are currently in operation.

Amidst the prevailing situation, the railway authorities had taken measures to run nearly 20 office trains this morning.
