An explosion in the Aruwakkaklu garbage site has been reported last night.

As a result our correspondent noted that those residing in the villages of Serakkuliiya and Karathivu near the garbage site have been traumatized.

It has been reported that the first methane testing in the garbage site was conducted yesterday and owing to an issue in a pipeline, the explosion had occurred.

However no casualties have been reported due to the explosion.

It has also been reported that as a result 29 tippers transporting garbage was sent back to Colombo.

Meanwhile, the foul odour which was reported of owing to the heavy rains experienced in the past few days disrupting the proper garbage depositing process in the Aruwakkalu garbage site, has been normalized.

It was reported that nearly 30 lorries from the Colombo municipal council transport garbage daily, and for the past few days owing to the heavy rains, the process had been hampered.

Our correspondent noted that as the garbage had been placed outside the Aruwakkalu garbage site, a foul odor was reported in and around area.

The secretary to the ministry of megapolis and western development, Nihal Rupasinghe noted that however as several measures to prevent the odor had been taken including the use of chemicals, garbage is to be deposited according to the proper process.
