A news item has been reported from Neerangamuwa – Aluthgama – Galewela where three girls have been isolated in school and from society saying that they have contracted HIV.

However, medical tests have revealed that they are suffering from a skin disease. The three girls are 8, 13, and 14 years of age.

Their 24 year old elder sister had returned home subsequent to being abroad and it is reported that she is the one who had got this skin disease first.

She had gone abroad in the year 2018 to work in a garment factory and returned to the island last February. She had undergone an HIV test as well then.

The test had confirmed that she had not contracted HIV. However, with a rumour spreading that she was suffering from HIV her three sisters who were attending school had been isolated by the Principal of the school, teachers and villagers.

Another rumour stated that the three students as well as their 27 year old sister and her three and a half year old child had become victims of this skin disease.

In the face of this situation the three girls have given up going to school since two weeks ago and they told the Hiru News Division that they are unable to attend the same school again.

Anyhow, a Dermatologist at the Skin Clinic of the Dambulla Hospital has examined these girls and declared that with proper treatment their skin condition can be cured.
