The Police and the Government Analyst have commenced investigations to find out whether the explosion in a tank at the Aruwakkalu Garbage site was an act of sabotage or not.

Police said that some explosion took place within a tank which stores solid waste at the Aruwakkalu Garbage yard.

Our Hiru Correspondent said that as a result people in the Serakkuliya and Karativu villages in the vicinity of the garbage site had been severely shocked.

It is reported that 29 tipper trucks carrying garbage and waste from Colombo to Aruwakkalu had been turned back as a result of this explosion.

Secretary to the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development Nihal Rupasinghe said that transporting of garbage is now taking place as usual.

Meanwhile, area residents alleged that garbage being collected daily in the Hatton – Dikoya municipality areas of authority is being disposed of into the Castlereagh reservoir.

They said that on certain occasions employees of the municipal council very slyly dispose of garbage into the reservoir.
