Presidential Election 2019 Update - 80% of Sri Lankans have voted

The Presidential Elections for the Selection of the 7th Executive President of Sri Lanka ended at 5 pm and the Election Commission has stated that the total percentage of voters who cast their votes for the 2019 presidential election is around 80%.
There was a total of 12,845 polling booths across the country for the 15,992,096 eligible voters to cast their vote.
When the voting is over the ballot boxes will be brought to the counting centers.
The Election Officer stated that the voter turnout in the Nuwara Eliya District was 80%, Puttalam District 75% and Polonnaruwa District 80%.
Officials stated that the voter turnout was 75% in the Kegalle District, 80% in Moneragala, 80% in Matara, 75% in Mannar, 84% in Ratnapura, 75% in Kalutara, 80% in Kandy, 80% in Matale and 80% in Galle.
The voter turnout in Gampaha District was 80%, Badulla 80%, Jaffna 66.5%, Mullaitivu 76.2%, Digamadulla 80%, Kurunegala 80%, Trincomalee 82%, Hambantota 75% 80% and Vanni 74.34%.
The officials in charge said that the Ballot boxes are being brought to counting centers.
The Presidential Election where 35 candidates contested will enter the history books as the election with the highest number of presidential candidates in Sri Lanka. Extending the voting time period by an hour as opposed to previous elections was a special feature this time.
The 2018 electoral register was used for the presidential election.
