A passenger train has derailed in the Canadian province of Ontario, killing at least three people and leaving several others trapped.

The train travelling from Niagara Falls to Toronto crashed near Burlington.

About 75 people are believed to have been on the train.

It is not clear what caused the accident.

Images from the scene showed at least one carriage lying on its side.

Burlington Mayor Rick Goldring said at least three people had been killed and emergency crews were working to pull other passengers from the wreckage.

He said the crash had caused minor damage to nearby buildings.

Canadian media reported that the injured are being taken to hospital in nearby Hamilton.
