Thailand yesterday publicly declared that it supports Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Thailand Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Surapong Tovichakchaikul addressing the High Level Segment at the 19th Session of the Human Rights Council said that Thailand supports the Sri Lankan Government’s voluntary engagement with the international community.

In his speech the Foreign Affairs Minister also said that in Thailand’s view, the Council should pursue further efforts to enhance such a cooperative approach, particularly on country situations.

Thailand also said that it values Sri Lanka’s efforts to consider how to best implement the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission.

The speech when on to say that the UNHRC should take into account the views of countries concerned and the efforts they have made and should also allow adequate time to exhaust domestic remedies and engage them in the whole deliberation process.

The Thailand Foreign Minister also said that such an approach is indeed applicable to the case of Sri Lanka, which has made considerable advances towards national reconciliation and sustainable development after years of strife and that Sri Lanka’s home-grown process should be prioritized to address the remaining issues.
