The United National Party held a protest march demanding the government to provide relief to the public in Panadura yesterday.
Several party stalwarts including UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe took part in this protest march.
Speaking on the occasion General Secertary Tissa Attanayake stated that the government is not thinking about the people.
Meanwhile, a tense situation occurred during the protest march held near the Panadura bus stop yesterday.
The situation erupted when UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa and MP Dayasiri Jayasekera attempted to hold a separate meeting without participating in the protest march.
Our reporter in the area said the group led by UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa tried to hold a separate meeting without participating in the protest march since the Deputy Leader had been denied an opportunity to address the gathering.
In response to a query an organiser of the "Opposition's Protest" movement said that since it had been decided that only one leader would be provided opportunity to make an address from a political party, the opportunity to deliver the address from the UNP had been given to Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.
However the organiser further added that the manner in which the group including Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa acted was considered as an attempt to jeopardise the protest.
Meanwhile the disciplinary inquiry on UNP MP Buddhika Patirana was held at UNP party headquarters yesterday.
MP Buddhika Patirana had submitted a letter for the second time at the disciplinary inquiry.
A disciplinary inquiry committee member said that this letter included an apology by MP Buddhika Patirana for any harm that had been caused by him to the party and that he would refrain from doing anything similar in the future.
Accordingly the attention of the disciplinary committee is focused on providing a recommendation to the working committee with regard to the MP's disciplinary inquiry.
