The annual report of UNICEF titled ‘Children in an Urban World’ was launched this morning at the Presidential Secretariat. The report was presented to the Minister of International Financial Corporation at a ceremony attended by the President’s Secretary Lalith Weerathunga, Minister of Agriculture Lackshman Yapa Abeywardena and the representatives of UNICEF.
The main focus of this year’s report is the increasing numbers of children growing in urban areas.
The report forecasts that seven out of every ten will be living in an urban setting by year 2050.
The report urges that, in such a backdrop, the children must be presented with the amenities and opportunities they need to realize their rights and potential while making a series of recommendations to achieve that.
