The American Embassy in Sri Lanka has released an explanatory statement regarding the report published by the Press Trust of India regarding US Special Forces being stationed in Sri Lanka.
The PTI reported that an American Defence Spokesperson had informed the US congress that US Special Forces personnel are stationed at several South Asian countries.
In the explanatory statement the US Embassy stated that the report in the PTI is misleading.
It explains that the Special Forces personnel are assigned to office support programs at the Embassy and that the assignments are based on a bilateral agreement between Sri Lanka and the United States.
It further adds that they report directly to the Defence representative at the embassy and are also involved in training that enhances cooperation.
The statement also speaks of the joint training programs conducted by the US military and Sri Lanka, their assistance in restoration of schools and hospitals and also the medical and humanitarian assistance programs.
Meanwhile, military spokesperson Brigadier Nihal Hapuarachchi also speaking regarding the PTI report stated that no US Special Forces or any other foreign forces are currently stationed in the country.
