The Minister of Transport Kumara Welgama stated in parliament yesterday that they are looking in to the possibility of providing free transportation for Buddhist monks in CTB buses and trains.
The minister made these comments at the adjournment debate.
UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella had brought in a proposal requesting for monks to be given free transport in CTB buses and trains in lieu of the 2600 Sambuddhathva Jayanthiya.
The UNP MP also said that discussions had been held with the monks in this regard.
He also added that it was noteworthy that the Minister of Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs Prime Minister D M Jayaratne was not present in parliament at the time this proposal was brought up.
Responding to these questions, Minister Kumara Welgama stated that the government has already provided a 20% concession on bus fares and train tickets for monks.
He added that MP Kiriella was attempting to bring disrepute to the government with his statements.
