The tension that had arisen at Kotaketana in Kahawatta last afternoon has ended.
After the spread of a rumour that several persons had been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the recent double murders at Kahawatta, residents of the area behaved in a riotous manner burning four houses belonging to suspects.
Our reporters said that while one of these suspects was a Kahawatta Divisional Councillor three of his houses and a house of a resident of Opaatha suspected of involvement in the incident have been destroyed by the arson.
Subsequently the police had brought the situation under control and requested the people to cooperate with the police by refraining from acts like arson since such acts would destroy evidence if any evidence relevant to the killing existed.
However the riotous situation in the area had been brought under control and the Special Task Force and special police security had been deployed in Kahawatta until this morning.
In response to a query by our news team with regard to the incident, police media spokesman SP Ajith Rohana, said that the country would be informed about the suspects soon.
