In a special message to mark International Women’s Day, President Mahinda Rajapakse states that protecting the girl child ensures protection for the whole society.
The message adds that it is essential for a society to ensure the safety of women.
The President further adds that this year’s theme of “protecting the girl child” adds much value to the commemoration of women’s day.
President Rajapakse added that the foundation of society is the family and a woman is the corner-stone of that unit.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister D M Jayaratne in his message stated that women were the worst affected by the 30 year war in the country.
He added that as a society we are still strides behind in ensuring respect and protection of women.
Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe also issuing a message to mark International Women’s Day is requesting the government to come up with a positive program to realise this year’s theme of protecting the girl child.
Further more, Minister of Child Development and Women’s Affairs Tissa Karaliyedde in his message stated that there is still an issue as to whether the ever-changing society is ready to accept the new role of women instead of the conventional ideas.
