The Government Medical Officers Association stated that even they are not aware of the reason for the delay in formulating a National Policy on Essential Drugs.

We inquired regarding this from the Assistant Secretary of the GMOA Dr Nalin Ariyarathna.

However, the Health Ministry stated that the Drugs Control Standards Act has already been formulated.

Health Minister Maithreepala Sirisena speaking at a media briefing in Colombo yesterday expressed these views.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry has decided to ban the drug named “Lindane” that has been in use in the country for the past 30 years.

The decision has been taken since the usage of this drug for long periods of time could result in serious health issues.

Meanwhile, the use of the birth control vaccine named Depo Medroxi Progesteron has also been temporarily suspended.

This is after a woman in Kandy had passed away following an infection after obtaining the vaccine.
