The farmers in Higurakgoda and Minneriya engaged in a protest this morning in front of the Higurakgoda Clock Tower demanding to increase the amount paid for a kilogram of paddy up to 40 rupees.

The paddy farmers pointed out that the government purchases paddy from farmers at a minimum level.

However, when our News Team inquired from the Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Affairs Johnston Fernando regarding this, he stated that the government is prepared to purchase paddy which are at the required standards.
