The Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms says that 2848 of the current prison detainees have not received any education.

According to the 2010 reports there are 32,128 prisoners in the country.

Out of these, while 5,151 have been educated up to grade five, 7,065 have passed that grade.

The Ministry said that 9,440 detainees have passed grade eight, 5336 have passed their O/L’s and 1353 their A/L’s.

There also 46 graduates among the detainees.

Minister Chandrasiri Gajadheera said that it has been decided to begin a prison school on behalf of the prisoners.

He made these comments at a ceremony held to lay the foundation for this school which is to be constructed at the Watareka Prison.

The Minister further said that while 35 million rupees have been invested for this, it will provide opportunity for education for about 400 prisoners.
