The special raids unit of the Wildlife Conservation Department have raided a private zoo which was due to be opened in Ahungalle.
A senior spokesperson of the department stated that the zoo which was operating in this location previously was also raided and shut down.
The previous zoo was run by a Muslim in the area and another company was getting ready to re-open a zoo in this location.
The raids unit found 15 species of animals including deer, crocodiles, birds, snakes, rabbits and tortoises at the site.
They also arrested a care-taker who will be produced before the Balapitiya Magistrates court.
Speaking to our news team environmentalist Ravindra Kariyawasam stated that measures should be taken against individuals and organizations who carry out such operations that torture animals.
