International Political and Terrorism Expert Rohan Gunarathne has said that the Geneva Human Rights Commission can interfere in Sri Lanka’s internal issues in a very subtle way if the resolution put forward by the United States is passed.
We spoke to Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission Attorney-at-Law Prathiba Mahanamahewa regarding the current situation.
He stated that even if the resolution is passed in Geneva, sanctions can not be imposed on Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, sources in Geneva state that the US backed resolution against Sri Lanka will be presented to the Human Rights Council sessions tomorrow.
After the resolution has been tabled each member state will be given an opportunity to voice their opinion regarding it after which Sri Lanka will make their closing arguments.
Sources indicate that the speech on behalf of Sri Lanka will be made by Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe.
The vote on the resolution if required will also be held there after.
