The UNP accuses the Health Ministry of being irresponsible in its operations. UNP parliamentarian Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena made this accusation at a press briefing held today.
Meanwhile, several trade unions affiliated to the health sector convened press briefings this morning. Addressing a meeting, the General Secretary of the All Island Health Services Union, Gamini Kumarasinghe stated that the current situation has occurred as a result of the absence of a proper plan on the part of the ministry.
Addressing press briefing organized by the Federation of Health Service Trade Unions the Chairman of the Federation Saman Rathnapriya had this to say.
However, in response to these allegations the Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena stated that NGOs are spearheading these strikes in the health sector as well as in other sectors.
Meanwhile, a statement issued by the Ministry of Health stated that the hospitals functioned in the ordinary manner today despite the strike conducted by the minor staff members in the hospitals. The statement further stated that the security force personnel assisted the doctors and the nurses to provide health care.
