Russia has acknowledged that the US-initiated resolution against Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council was "politically motivated".
Russian Ambassador Alexander M Kadakin also called the resolution one that has ended up discrediting the Council itself.
The remark was made ahead of the BRICS regional defence summit in New Delhi.
He questioned as to why the Human Rights Council took a sudden decision to take up a country-specific resolution.
Both Russia and China voted against the resolution which criticized Sri Lanka for human rights violations.
