The new political party which the People’s Movement is preparing to launch is scheduled to be introduced on the 29th of March.
A Spokesperson for the People’s Movement stated that after the launching of this party, a party summit will be organised on the 09th of April.
Speaking further the spokesperson stated that the new office bearers of this party will be selected at this summit and then forwarded to the Department of Elections for registration.
However, according to the Election Act there is no possibility of registering a party during this period.
The Elections Commissioner stated that party registrations are currently not undertaken as an election has been called.
The Election Commissioner also stated that he has not been informed with regard to the new party of the People’s Movement.
The Election Commissioner further stated that as at present, there are approximately 1,000 parties in Sri Lanka which are functioning without proper registration.
