Sources from the UNP state that a decision has been taken not to hold the annual election which is held to select top officials of the party including party leader.
Reports indicate that the decision was taken based on recommendations made in the Srinath Perera Committee Report.
The recommendations are to elect top officials after a national election.
Accordingly the 8-1 section of the party constitution stating that party elections need to be held annually will have to be amended.
A senior spokesperson for the UNP stated that the constitutional amendment will take place during the party conference to be held once the renovation of party headquarters Sirikotha is completed.
The Srinath Perera Committee report on the attack carried out on Sirikotha suggested that elections like this create tense atmospheres and hampers the future of the party.
