UNP bans alternate May Day rallies

The United National Party has prohibited party members from organizing alternative May Day functions other than the party’s main rally to be held in Jaffna.

Several preliminary meeting have been held by the Sajith faction of the UNP to stage a separate May Day Rally.

The decision to prohibit such rallies was taken by the UNP upon details of the alternate rally coming to light.

However party sources indicate that this prohibition will not affect any commemoration ceremony to be held for former President Ranasinghe Premadasa.

Meanwhile, the UNP states that the government is going back to before 1977 by burdening the public with various taxes.

UNP media spokesperson MP Gayantha Karunathilaka expressed these views at a media briefing held in Colombo today.
