Minister of Foreign Affairs Professor G.L. Peiris left the island yesterday to engage on an official tour of the Maldives.

According to a statement issued by a foreign ministry spokesman, Professor G.L. Peiris is scheduled to meet the new president of Maldives Muhammad Wahid and the Foreign Minister of Maldives.

Professor G.L. Peiris is the first Sri Lankan Government Official to have engaged on an official tour of the Maldives since the ousting of former President Muhammad Nasheed.

The main intention of this official tour is to express gratitude to the decision taken by the Maldives to vote against the US resolution presented at the UNHRC Sessions in Geneva against Sri Lanka.
