A clergyman, who had allegedly caused alarm amongst court officials by stating that a hand grenade was in his possession, has eluded prison officials whilst receiving treatment at the Chilaw hospital.
According to police, the accused has been identified as venerable PIN-PARE SUMANA-RATHANA.
The accused had been taken into custody by the Karuwala-gas-wewa police in connection to a robbery which he had allegedly committed.
Subsequently the accused had been handed over to the Chilaw police station for further investigations.
Accordingly the accused had been produced before the Chilaw district court on the 04th of January.
Upon being produced before court, a hand grenade had been discovered concealed within his robe.
Consequently the accused had been placed under protective custody as per the orders of District Majistrate Jagath Kahandagama.
The suspect was re-produced before the Chilaw district court yesterday, where he had fallen unconscious and subsequently had been admitted to the Chilaw hospital.
While at hospital the accused had managed to evade the two prison officials placed for security and had fled the hospital premises during the course of last night.
Chilaw police are currently conducting investigations to ascertain as to how the accused had managed to escape the authorities.
