Singapore has urged China and the United States to take steps to reduce the danger of conflict between them.
Singapore's Defence Minister Nig Hen, who is on his first official visit to Washington DC, warned of potential consequences if rivalry between the two powers is allowed to escalate to confrontation.
Dr Nig is pushing for enhanced relationships between militaries as a way to promote peace between Washington and Beijing - and in the Asia-Pacific as a whole.
That approach was endorsed by US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta in a joint statement issued after the two leaders met at the Pentagon.
Turning to Singapore, Dr Nig said Singapore is not considering plans to host American troops, in the way Australia has done.
