On Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate the resurrection of the Lord, Jesus Christ.
Christians believe, according to Scripture, that Jesus came back to life, or was raised from the dead, three days after his death on the cross.
Through his death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus paid the penalty for sin, thus purchasing for all who believe in him, eternal life in Christ Jesus.
In Western Christianity, Easter marks the end of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline in preparation for Easter.
In a special message issued by President Mahinda Rajapakse commemorating Easter he stated that the Christian message of love and understanding can help much in the process of reconciliation now taking place in Sri Lanka to take us towards a lasting peace and unity.
He added that Christ's message of tolerance and understanding can also help free people and nations from the many conflicts that threaten peace today and also help the crisis faced by society due to the growing belief in opulence.
Prime Minister D M Jayaratne also issuing an Easter message stated that as a nation which suffered immensely within the clutches of terrorism, and now healing the wounds of heinous atrocities, the lessons we could learn from the life of Jesus are many.
Now we take a listen to a special segment on Easter.
