General Manager of the Maritime Environmental Protection Agency, Rear Admiral S. R. Samaratunga states that the ship, anchored 8 nautical miles off the coast of Panadura for over 3 years, is in risk of sinking with its cargo of crude oil.

De Thymothromopolyseara, whose captain had been prosecuted by the Sri Lankan courts, has come to Sri Lanka in 2009.

Rear Admiral S. R. Samaratunga states that the with the South West Monsoons approaching, this ship runs a grave risk of sinking.

He further stated that the ship has not been maintained and its machinery is no longer active and that the ship could also be set adrift in a situation where heavy winds could cause the anchor to break.
