Two after shocks were reported a few moments after an 8.6 magnitude earthquake was reported off the coast of Sumatra.

 

The initial shock wave was measured at 6.0 while the secondary measured upto 8.3 on the Richter scale.

 

The first earthquake caused a small tsunami of about 7 inches in Banda Aceh.

 

Meanwhile, the Tourist Board stated that measures have been taken to evacuate all tourists residing at coastal hotels.

 

The Tourist Board has requested all tourists to comply with warnings and information provided by the staff at their respective hotels.

 

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Ports and Highways Nirmala Kotalawala states that all CTB and private buses on the Southern Expressway will carry passengers free of charge as a result of the current situation.

 

Meanwhile, the Tissamaharama Police stated that the sea level around the Hambantota, Kirinda harbour receded for a short while and came back to normal.
