The Met Department states that thunder showers could occur in several places around the island today.
Duty Meteorologist Meryl Mendis stated that the activation of the inter tropical convergence zone is the reason for the incessant showers.
The highest rainfall of 88.7mm was recorded from Ratmalana while Colombo received a rainfall of 64mm.
The Met Department stated that heavy showers were experienced around the island.
Meanwhile, several roads were inundated due to the heavy rains last night.
The Traffic Police reported that Bastian Mawatha, Tumulla, Kotahena and Armour Street are all currently under water.
A large tree is also reported to have been uprooted by the heavy winds that accompanied the rains this morning.
Police have taken steps to remove the tree as soon as possible.
